Ever wondered how to fit 16 people from 6 different families into a 3 bedroom Victorian house?

We have just finished researching a house in what is now affluent Notting Hill, and discovered that the first inhabitants of the property had to put up with conditions described by a contemporary writer as a ‘dingy, ill-favoured slum’. No proper drainage, no bathroom and a tiny shared kitchen. Life for those in service or trade was tough in 1860s London.
